"stipend" meaning tax free income?
 

It depends. If it is not a fellowship awarded directly from NIH, for example, your stipend is paid from the PI's NIH grant, it should get taxed.
 

Are the new salary guidelines for NIH available yet? And does anyone have a link to the original source?

I can't seem to find a key to the Post-Doc Salary tables. What do the asterisks on years 5 and 6 mean? What do the double asterisks on the column headings mean?

What can I do if my stipend is less?. Is anyway that NIH protects postdoc when the stipend is paid from the PI's NIH grant?
 

These salaries are terrible; you have MD, DPM, PhD, whatever, and you make 50K-65K before taxes to work your rear off as the PI terry nickels and dimes you. this is not a 40/hr week job. this is an internship type job akin to MDs, DPMs, DOs residency training. weekends, odd hours, technically demanding work, post-doc purgatory, and 60+hr work weeks are common occurences. who in their right mind would pursue post-docing for some PI who only uses you for his self grandisement?!?!
 

Hi, just remind yourself that this is nothing else than an intellectually motivated self inflicted slavery. Learning is golden, but you better off to find a real job or opportunity to make real money. Your investment (time, effort, and all the suck up coming out from this so called postdoc arrangement is a waste of your life, period).
Most of the position will be filled on economical basis where the goal is to find the relatively best candidate who can be exploited for dirt cheap prices. All this in the name of Scientific progress and the benefit of mankind (with government support).

You can compare the situation to drug dealers/street distributors position where in the hope of unrealized breakouts and profit for one taken down dealer there is ten candidate trying to step in. Except in science for this category, they are all over from the world.

So how to rise up on the scientific food-chain? You can order my book about it.
